About our School

Our School

Turnshaws is a day special school for children with severe and profound learning difficulties. Our children and students range in age from two to nineteen years and they all, have very special needs. Their learning difficulties cover a wide range from those whose profound disabilities demand a high level of care including medically recommended support through to those who despite their difficulties attain a self-reliance, which enables a high degree of social independence.

The history of our school

Pre 1964

Group Training took place at the Drill hall in Kirkburton

1965 -

SEC (all age) was built in Turnshaws Avenue as a Junior Training Centre and a Senior Training Centre

1971 -

Education Department took over teaching for 5 - 16 year olds

Junior Training Centre was divided from the Adult Training Centre although meal and transport were still shared

1974 -

36 pupils - 4 classes - 4 teachers; 3 NTAs; 2 lunchtime supervisors

1976 -

Saw the first school residential holiday (but we can't remember where it was to!!!). Since then holidays have taken place on barges, in tents, in hotels, at holiday camps, in barns etc.

1978 -

The school was extended. The hall was doubled in size, classrooms (now G4 and G1) and secretary's office were added. The kitchen was added to the hall. School meals came from local school kitchens.

1999- The Social Education Centre was closed and modernised by Kirklees for Turnshaws' Upper School, Classes 5,6,7.
2001- Other rooms in the former S.E.C. were modernised to form the Nursery Class and the Autistic Unit.
